Naturally Unnatural

Are fast foods as healthy as the BIG BOYS say they are? Well I think we know that what the advertising and marketing people say and what REALLY goes into a “Big” Mac or a Dunkin donut, are very different things.

I have to say I was pleased to read some while ago about McDonald’s phasing out the use of certain “critically important” antibiotics in its chicken products. However, McDonald’s chicken will now be given ionophores, an antibiotic which helps keep chickens healthy, but is not used by humans!?

In addition to this great piece of news we also learn:

“McDonald’s also said that US dairy products, such as low fat white milk and fat-free chocolate milk, would be derived from cows that have not been treated with rbST – an artificial growth hormone.” Not before time, rBST has not been allowed on the market in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel or the European Union since 2000!

And this after constantly telling us for the last 20 years that we are, LOVING IT. Isn’t that nice of them?

The downside of BIG marketing is, I think, that after so many years of young (and not so young) people being told that is this how REAL chicken, burger, and donuts, etc look and taste, they believe it! And why not when this is the only message that they get.

Nothing personal here, even I eat the stuff sometimes (once in a bad year!) But now that their worldwide, like-for-like sales, are falling they are being pushed (not voluntary) towards producing more natural and less “processed junk food”.

And it is not only US companies, the Swiss food giant Nestle also announced that it would be removing all artificial flavors and colors from its chocolate products in the US. For example “In CRUNCH, natural vanilla flavor will replace artificial vanillin.”

Let us put our hands together in praise or applause and say,”WELL DONE” McDonalds, Dunkin, Krispy, Nestle, etc! Welcome to the club.

Here at Donut Square we have been doing that from day one when we started “FRESH- HOT-TASTY-DONUTS”. It took us many months to develop our Long Life Donut Mix, but we arrived where we wanted to be – with a mix that is totally free of additives, preservatives, colorants, dry substitutes, improvers, stabilizers… If it does not exist in NATURE it won’t be in our donut mix. Simple as that.

“We never compromise on taste” the BIG BOYS say. NEITHER DO WE. That is why we use REAL EGGS to prepare our donut batter. Yes real fresh eggs, in shells, from real chickens.

OR

It may sound a bit “strange” nowadays when almost everything is instant, and often comes out of a smartphone app. But believe me there is nothing better than whole natural eggs to make freshly cooked donuts.

After all when buying and eating donuts, many of us are still trying to travel back to those golden days, when we were little children ourselves. At the fun fair or on the beach. I know it from myself – the donuts then tasted so yummy, but we never had enough money for more. Maybe that’s why.

Or maybe, just maybe, because they did not put in them egg powder, colorants, stabilizers, improvers….

The Right Ingredients

We would like to post here as often as we can, but most of the time we are so busy with customers and new ideas, so here we are… The first post now follows and hopefully will reach a lot of you out there. We carefully thought what should we write about in the first post and decided that DONUT MIX is probably the most important ingredient after a reliable donut machine for you to succeed and offer world class FRESH, HOT, TASTY, DONUTS.

Making DONUTS is a snap with ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Flour, egg, sugar, milk, and a pinch of baking powder. Then of course the shortening or frying oil and all should be easy.

If you Google “donut recipe” you will need a life time to read all the results. The DONUTS come in many different flavours, shapes and sizes, and even more toppings and glazings to decorate them.

baking-ingredients

Now the question is which recipe to choose? Yes all of them are made of the few basic ingredients starting with flour. Which flour? Do you know that there are over 70 (yes SEVENTY) different plain flours divided by protein content, the finest of the flour, etc!

Move on to the baking powder and the number is similar – over 70 (known to us at least) different baking powders.

How about the eggs – you have the choice of fresh eggs, pasteurized eggs, egg yolks, egg whites, egg powder…..

One can really roll their sleeves up and start testing all those varieties and combinations. And yes, you will eventually produce fantastic DONUTS that your customers will love.

But how much time will you put down in your business plan for “recipe development”. If the answer is less than a month then you better be prepared for some surprises.

It might sound trivial, but it is so very important that you have the right ingredients in the right proportions. It took us about six months to choose the correct flour, baking powder, milk powder, etc. Then we had to experiment with the proportions for another six months…. But eventually we produced the Donut Square’s Long Life Donut Mix (LLDM) that is the best tasting donut mix on the market, worldwide.

Having made the world’s best testing donut mix, we did not stop there, Long Life Donut Mix (LLDM) has one great unique feature – it has its own Long Life. As most of you that are in the donut business already know only too well, that when you mix your dry mix with the water, your batter has a life of about four hours. After about four hours (sometimes as few as two hours) the shapes of the donuts go strange and uneven because the raising agent has “gassed off”. So you can only mix few kg at a time as you do not want to waste unsold mixture at the end of the day or even after three or four hours.

Here at Donut square we said to ourselves: how about if you want to mix once in the morning and then just top up your hopper during the day. Or how about if you mix once on Monday (for example it is your slowest day) and then use it during the week and no more messing about with mixers and washing mixing bowls etc. All you have to do it put it in the fridge or freezer and help yourself when you need some more.

That is how exactly we made our LLDM to be – great testing, very competitive price (one of the lowest in the UK market) and long lasting. Please follow this link Long Life Donut Mix (LLDM) to find out about prices, delivery etc.

If you want to buy only a small sample of our LLDM, please click here.

For all of our customers outside of UK we have developed the LLDM Concentrate. It is the same basic ingredients except the flour (which is quite a large proportion of any Donut mix). The reason is of course to save you money with the transport – after all flour is one of the most easily available raw materials almost in every country in the world. So the cost of shipping then becomes about 2/3 cheaper per kilogram of complete mix, all you have to do is to add your local flour (we are going to give you good advice which flour).

There are details about this here LLDM Concentrate.

So if you have not tried our DONUTS yet, do not wait anymore. If you have – we’d love to hear your comments. Let us and the rest of our readers know how easy and satisfying it is to offer the

BEST TASTING DONUT in the world.

Or just give us a call, a tweet, a Facebook message, send us an email with any more questions and we shall be happy to answer.
